Texas holdem odds

Needless to say, it is not that easy and quite a challenge to make a clear-cut decision when playing real money Texas Hold’em. No wonder, as money is involved. That is why you always have to weigh every step you take and evaluate your chances to win. It is for this reason that you ought to consider pot odds and also implied odds when playing Texas Hold’em.

Pot odds mean odds that you need to justify your call. These are based on the amount of money in the pot assuming that you will hit the draw.

Let’s use the following example as an illustration to the point. Suppose there are $50 and you need $10 to call. In this case it could be said that your odds here are 5-to-1. In order to act accordingly, bear in mind that if your chances to win are higher than 5-to-1, the best thing is to call, while in case they are lower, you should fold.

However, it won’t do to base your decision on pot odds only.

Basically, when you make your calculations, using the money already in the pot, you neglect all the bets to come, while implied odds take future bets into account.

Obviously, nobody promised that even if you get the desired hand, you will necessarily win the game. You may be drawing dead after all, which means that the hand you are so eager to hit may still not beat those of your opponents. Therefore, your chance of hitting the draw may be high, but it does not equal to your chance of winning the game.

When calculating odds in Texas Hold’em, you should also take into consideration your position at the table, outs and the number of cards already exposed.

That actually may seem to be too many things you have to think of and take into account while you have to act quickly, so as not to become an ocean of tells for others to enjoy. Just imagine yourself trying to do the sums on a piece of paper, while everyone is waiting for you to finish. This is exactly where pot odds calculators come in handy. They are able to give you information on the chances you have to hit the draw (in percents) and also the amount you can call. Pot odds calculators are a very helpful tool; however, it won’t be wise to base your decision only on the result they give, as they do not consider implied odds and reversed odds. What if you already hold the best hand of all?
